The best Brooks running shoe for most women is the Ghost 18: a firm, steady neutral trainer that RunRepeat recommends both for heel strikers and for runners who want one shoe that does everything, sold in four women's widths. If your ankles roll inward as you tire, the Adrenaline GTS 25. For long runs, the softer Glycerin 23. If you are starting from scratch with walk breaks, the Ghost Max 4. Every buy link on this page points at the women's listing, not the men's.

The short answer

Decoding the Brooks names

  • Ghost — the balanced neutral daily trainer. The default.
  • Glycerin — the Ghost with softer, deeper foam, for long runs.
  • Ghost Max — tall and rockered, the most forgiving ride Brooks makes.
  • GTS — "Go-To Support": the same shoe plus GuideRails. Adrenaline GTS is the Ghost with support; Glycerin GTS is the Glycerin with support.
  • Ariel — the women's maximum-support shoe, with the widest fit and the most structure.
  • Launch — light and low, for faster days.
  • Revel — the budget line.

There is no women's-only foam or women's-only geometry here, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What is genuinely women's-specific is the last — the shape the shoe is built on — and the width run, which is why those are what this page reports.

Women's widths, and why they matter

Brooks lists the women's Adrenaline GTS 25 in four widths, the women's Glycerin GTS 23 to 2E, and the Ariel GTS 26 to 2E with a roomy upper for orthotics. That matters because the most common sizing mistake in women's running shoes is buying a half size longer to get width: the AAOS asks for a shoe that adequately grips your heel to ensure stability with room to wiggle your toes, and a too-long shoe gives you neither. Running Warehouse's fit guide asks for a thumbnail of space at the front and no more.

Feet also swell through a training block, so measure both at the end of the day and fit the larger one. If width is your binding constraint, read best running shoes for wide feet or best running shoes for narrow feet.

The range, side by side

The three shoes that cover most women's Brooks buyers. Every value links to Brooks' page or the named lab's measurement.
The forgiving one, the maximum-support one and the fast one.

The number that decides the Ghost-versus-Glycerin question is softness, not stack: RunRepeat measured the Ghost 18's midsole at 40.5 AC and the Glycerin 23's at 29.2 AC against a 35.5 AC lab average. The Glycerin is the softer shoe with more forefoot foam and a lower measured drop; the Ghost is firmer, cheaper and more versatile. Full head-to-head in Brooks Ghost vs Glycerin.

Which Brooks for your weekly mileage

  • Couch to 5K. The NHS Couch to 5K plan is nine weeks of three run/walk sessions. The Ghost Max 4 if walk breaks are a big part of your sessions — RunRepeat's lab review covers its rockered, forgiving platform — or the Ghost 18 if you want a shoe that will still be right at 10K. The Revel 9 if budget is the deciding factor.
  • 10K training. Ghost 18, in the right width. Add the Launch 12 only if you have a weekly faster session; RTINGS has the lab figures.
  • Half marathon. Higdon's Novice 1 Half peaks at a 10-mile long run, which is where the Glycerin earns its weight. Ghost 18 midweek, Glycerin 23 on Sundays.
  • Marathon. Novice 1 Marathon is four runs a week for 18 weeks. Glycerin 23 for long runs, Ghost 18 or Adrenaline GTS 25 for easy days. Race day picks are in best marathon shoes for women.

Stability & fit range (15%)

7

What it gets right

  • Four widths (Narrow, Medium, Wide, Extra Wide): one of the broadest fit ranges in this group
  • A 10 mm listed drop keeps a traditional heel-to-toe geometry, familiar to runners coming from everyday sneakers
  • Running Warehouse pitches it for daily mileage, long steady efforts, recovery runs and walks
  • No plate: a conventional build with nothing unusual to adapt to

What it doesn't

  • 9.99 oz lab-measured (men's US 9): heavier than the Novablast 6 or Mach 7
  • A 25.8 mm lab-measured forefoot is thinner than max-cushion shoes for 18-20 mile long runs

Skip this if…

…you want a light, bouncy shoe for tempo work, or you prefer a low-drop (under 8 mm) geometry.

What it gets right

  • Brooks pitches it both as a daily driver in a training rotation and as a safe go-to for runners just starting out, and lists walking as a use
  • Four widths in each gender, from Narrow to Extra Wide (4E men's, 2E women's)
  • GuideRails support system, which Brooks says helps keep excess movement in check, paired with more nitrogen-infused cushioning in the heel and forefoot than before
  • RunRepeat's lab measured a 36.1 mm heel and 25.9 mm forefoot: solid cushion without a towering stack

What it doesn't

  • 10.6 oz for the men's shoe is heavy for faster running
  • A 10 mm drop is on the high side if you prefer a flatter, lower-drop shoe
  • Brooks rates the cushion 'Balanced'; runners who want Brooks' 'Plush' tier with GuideRails need the Glycerin GTS 23

  • Measured drop (8.2 mm) matches the listed 8 mm, a familiar geometry for heel strikers
  • Dual-density DNA Tuned midsole aimed at comfort on easy and long miles
  • A lower 37 mm heel than the max-stack giants, so less of an adjustment for C25K graduates

What it doesn't

  • At 10.7 oz (men's) it weighs about as much as the taller Bondi 9
  • Less foam underfoot than dedicated max shoes like the Glycerin Max 2 or Bondi 9

  • Brooks lists a 6 mm drop but RunRepeat measured 9.0 mm
  • Built for easy pace only, with no speed-oriented foam

What it gets right

  • RTINGS measured a moderate 34.3 mm heel / 26.2 mm forefoot, for runners who don't want a tall platform
  • RTINGS describes it as stable without relying on corrective features, with easygoing appeal for newer runners
  • DNA Flash v2 in the forefoot and DNA Flash in the heel

What it doesn't

  • RTINGS notes this version added stack and weight over the last one
  • Moderate stack means less cushion than the super trainers here for 18-20 mile marathon long runs
  • RTINGS sees it working for 5K or 10K racing but not as a marathon race shoe

How to choose

  1. Decide about support first. If your arches collapse inward and your knees track in as you tire, the GTS shoes are built for that. If not, skip the weight.
  2. Then pick the foam. Ghost for firm and versatile, Glycerin for soft and long, Ghost Max for maximum forgiveness.
  3. Buy the width, not the next size up. Brooks gives you four women's widths on its core shoes. Use them.
  4. Buy the Launch second, never first. A light low shoe is the wrong first pair and a very good second one.
  5. Consider the Ariel only if you need maximum structure. Orthotics, a brace, or a history of rolling inward badly. Otherwise it is more shoe than you need.

Common mistakes

  • Buying the Glycerin because it costs more. It is softer and heavier, not better. RunRepeat faults its below-average energy return and 10.7 oz weight.
  • Reading GTS as "better". It means support. In a neutral foot it just adds mass.
  • Sizing up for width. The Ghost 18 has a tapered toebox in RunRepeat's assessment; the answer is a 2E, not a half size.
  • Training a marathon block in the Revel 9. It is an entry-level shoe with a modest midsole.
  • Assuming a women's shoe needs different tech. It needs a women's last and the right width. That is what Brooks actually provides, and it is enough.

How we chose these

Researched, compared, scored for your level

We start from what a published training plan actually asks of a runner at your level, compare every model's published specs (stack height, drop, weight, plate, stability features, widths) against that job, and score each pick on a public rubric. Each spec links to where it came from, so you can shortlist in minutes and buy with the numbers in front of you.

Scores are our editorial judgments from that documented research, and rankings are earned on the rubric alone — placement is never for sale. The rubric and weights are on the How We Pick page.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best Brooks running shoe for women?
The Ghost 18 for most women: a firm, steady neutral trainer in four women's widths that RunRepeat recommends for heel strikers and as a one-shoe-does-everything pick. The Adrenaline GTS 25 is the support version and the Glycerin 23 the softer long-run option.
What does GTS mean on a Brooks shoe?
Go-To Support. It is the same shoe with GuideRails added, which work on the heel rather than the arch. The Adrenaline GTS 25 is the Ghost with support; the Glycerin GTS 23 is the Glycerin with support.
Brooks Ghost or Glycerin for a woman running a half marathon?
Both work. The Glycerin 23 is softer (29.2 AC against the Ghost's 40.5 AC in RunRepeat's lab) with more forefoot foam, which suits the long run; the Ghost 18 is firmer, lighter and better for everything else. Many runners own one of each.
Do Brooks women's running shoes come in wide?
Yes. The core women's shoes are listed in four widths, and the Glycerin GTS 23 and Ariel GTS 26 run to a 2E with a roomy upper that accepts an orthotic.
Which Brooks is best for a first-ever pair of running shoes?
The Ghost Max 4 if your sessions include a lot of walking, or the Ghost 18 if you want a pair you will still be happy with at 10K. See also best running shoes for beginner women.
