Choosing shoes for your level

What running shoes should a complete beginner buy?
One comfortable, well-fitting daily trainer. A run/walk plan like NHS Couch to 5K is three short sessions a week, which doesn't call for a carbon plate or a second pair. Our best running shoes for beginners page ranks the options.
How many pairs of running shoes do I need?
At Couch-to-5K and 10K level, one good daily trainer is enough. A second pair starts to make sense when your week has two different jobs in it — easy miles and faster work — which usually happens in half and marathon training. The rotation guide walks through it by level.
What does "daily trainer" mean?
It's the shoe that carries most of your miles at easy pace: cushioned enough for regular running, durable, and not built for just one kind of run. See running shoe types explained.
Do I need stability shoes?
Not necessarily. Stability shoes add features meant to guide the foot and limit side-to-side motion; many runners do well in neutral shoes. Our neutral vs stability guide explains the difference. If you have pain or an injury, ask a clinician rather than relying on a shoe label.
Are carbon-plated shoes worth it for a beginner?
Usually not as a first shoe. Carbon “super shoes” are race-day tools designed for faster running; a new runner gets far more from a comfortable daily trainer. We look at the research and who benefits in are carbon-plated shoes worth it.
What size running shoe should I get?
Many runners find they need a bit more room than in everyday shoes, especially for longer runs, but fit varies by brand and foot. Measure late in the day, wear your running socks, and check the toe box. Our sizing guide goes step by step.

Training levels and gear

How long is the long run in a beginner half marathon plan?
In Hal Higdon's Novice 1 Half Marathon plan, the weekend long run builds to 10 miles over 12 weeks. See our half marathon training mileage guide.
How far is the longest run in a first-marathon plan?
In Hal Higdon's Novice 1 Marathon plan, the long run peaks at 20 miles in an 18-week schedule. That's where a rotation and a water plan earn their keep — see the marathon section.
Do I need a running watch?
Not to start. A phone app can track a run/walk plan. A GPS watch becomes more useful as runs get longer and you start pacing workouts. Read do I need a running watch.
Should I carry water on a run?
On short runs many runners don't, but longer runs in half and marathon training are where carrying water becomes a real question. Our guide to carrying water while running compares handhelds, belts and vests.
When should I replace my running shoes?
There's no single mileage that fits every shoe and runner. Look for worn-through outsoles, midsoles that no longer rebound, and a shoe that no longer feels like it did. See when to replace running shoes.

About this site

Do you test the shoes you recommend?
No, and we don't claim to. We compare published specs against what each training level asks and score every pick on a public rubric. Every spec links to its source. Details are on How We Pick.
Why don't you show prices?
Prices are set by the retailer and change often. We only show a price that comes from a live, dated retailer feed; otherwise the button says “Check price on Amazon” so you see the current price there.
How do you make money?
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Commission never sets a ranking. See the affiliate disclosure.
Why do some buttons say "sold through third-party sellers"?
When we checked, some brands' current running shoes (HOKA and Nike, for example) were sold on Amazon mainly by third-party sellers rather than an official brand store. We still list them where they're the right pick, and we tell you so.
Are the product photos of the actual shoes?
Not yet. Product cards show licensed stock photos chosen for each product's role, labeled “Stock photo.” Check the retailer listing for the exact model and colors.
I found an error. How do I report it?
Use the contact form and pick “Correction.” We check it against the source and fix confirmed errors. See the editorial policy.
