Best Brooks Running Shoes: Which Model for Your Mileage

Brooks sells nine road shoes worth owning and names them in a way that hides what they do. This page translates the range: Ghost, Glycerin and Ghost Max are the neutral tiers, GTS means GuideRails support, and Launch and Hyperion are the fast ones.

The best Brooks running shoe for most runners is the Brooks Ghost 18: a neutral daily trainer with a 36.6 mm heel, a 10.8 mm lab-measured drop per RTINGS and four widths from Narrow to Extra Wide. If your arches collapse inward, buy the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 instead. If you want the plushest ride, it is the Glycerin 23 — or the Glycerin Max 2 if you want the tallest stack Brooks makes.

Decoding the Brooks range

Brooks names shoes by family, not by function, which is why people buy the wrong one. The translation:

  • Ghost — the neutral daily trainer. Balanced, unexciting, four widths.
  • Glycerin — the same idea with more and softer foam. Brooks calls this its "Plush" cushion tier.
  • Ghost Max / Glycerin Max — rockered, taller, broader. Built for easy miles and for runners who want the most protection.
  • GTS — any model with GuideRails support added. Adrenaline GTS, Glycerin GTS, Beast GTS, Ariel GTS.
  • Launch — the light, plateless, traditional fast shoe.
  • Hyperion — the speed family. Hyperion Max is the plated super trainer; Hyperion Elite is the carbon racer.
  • Revel — the value trainer.

Which Brooks for your weekly mileage

  • Under 10 miles a week (Couch to 5K). Ghost 18, or Revel 9 if budget matters, or Ghost Max 4 if you are heavier or doing a lot of walking. Three sessions a week is all the NHS plan asks for, and one pair covers it.
  • 10–20 miles a week (5K to 10K). Ghost 18 for everything, plus the Launch 12 if Higdon's Novice 10K has you doing anything faster than easy pace.
  • 20–30 miles a week (half marathon). Glycerin 23 for the long run Higdon takes to 10 miles, Ghost 18 for the rest, Launch 12 or Hyperion Max 4 for workouts.
  • 30–40 miles a week (marathon). Glycerin 23 or Glycerin Max 2 for long and recovery runs, Ghost 18 daily, Hyperion Max 4 for uptempo. The 20-mile long run in Novice 1 Marathon is what the Max shoes exist for.
  • You need support, at any mileage. Adrenaline GTS 25 first. Glycerin GTS 23 if you want support plus plush. Our Ghost vs Adrenaline comparison settles the common version of this question.

What GuideRails actually do

Most support shoes historically used a firmer wedge of foam under the arch to resist pronation. Brooks describes GuideRails differently: raised foam at the sides of the heel that limits excess movement when it occurs rather than correcting the foot continuously. In practice it means a support shoe that feels closer to a neutral one, which is why the Adrenaline is the support shoe we recommend most often. Whether you need any support at all is a separate question — see neutral vs stability running shoes.

The range, side by side

The three neutral tiers: daily, plush and rockered max. Every value links to the lab or maker that published it.
The two GuideRails support shoes.
The two fast shoes and the tallest stack in the range.

The range spans roughly 11 mm of heel stack, from the Revel 9 at 33.8 mm to the Glycerin Max 2 at 45.4 mm, and about 2.5 oz of weight. That is a genuinely complete road line-up; the thing it is missing is a plateless super-foam trainer in the mould of the adidas Adizero Evo SL.

Brooks widths, which are the real reason to buy

If you are hard to fit, Brooks is usually the first brand to try. The Ghost 18 is listed in Narrow, Medium, Wide and Extra Wide per RTINGS; the Adrenaline GTS 25 runs Narrow (1B) to Extra Wide (4E) for men and 2A to 2E for women; the Glycerin GTS 23 covers 1D to 4E. Brooks also makes the two maximum-support shoes — Beast GTS 26 for men and Ariel GTS 26 for women — with uppers it lists as roomy enough for orthotics. The exception is the Glycerin Max 2: men's narrow and standard only, per RunRepeat. Check that one before you fall for the stack height.

What Brooks does not do well

Two honest gaps. First, race day: the Hyperion Elite 6 is a competent carbon racer, but Nike, adidas, ASICS and Saucony all have deeper race lines — see best carbon-plated running shoes. Second, lightweight super trainers: at 10.1 oz the Hyperion Max 4 is heavy for its category. If your priority is a light, fast shoe you can train in every day, the Brooks answer is the plain Launch 12 and you look elsewhere for the exotic foam.

9.5
Mileage protection (25%)
8
Stability & fit range (15%)
8.3
Pace responsiveness (15%)
6
Rotation versatility (15%)
7

What it gets right

  • Four widths (Narrow, Medium, Wide, Extra Wide): one of the broadest fit ranges in this group
  • A 10 mm listed drop keeps a traditional heel-to-toe geometry, familiar to runners coming from everyday sneakers
  • Running Warehouse pitches it for daily mileage, long steady efforts, recovery runs and walks
  • No plate: a conventional build with nothing unusual to adapt to

What it doesn't

  • 9.99 oz lab-measured (men's US 9): heavier than the Novablast 6 or Mach 7
  • A 25.8 mm lab-measured forefoot is thinner than max-cushion shoes for 18-20 mile long runs

Skip this if…

…you want a light, bouncy shoe for tempo work, or you prefer a low-drop (under 8 mm) geometry.

7.2

What it gets right

  • Brooks pitches it both as a daily driver in a training rotation and as a safe go-to for runners just starting out, and lists walking as a use
  • Four widths in each gender, from Narrow to Extra Wide (4E men's, 2E women's)
  • GuideRails support system, which Brooks says helps keep excess movement in check, paired with more nitrogen-infused cushioning in the heel and forefoot than before
  • RunRepeat's lab measured a 36.1 mm heel and 25.9 mm forefoot: solid cushion without a towering stack

What it doesn't

  • 10.6 oz for the men's shoe is heavy for faster running
  • A 10 mm drop is on the high side if you prefer a flatter, lower-drop shoe
  • Brooks rates the cushion 'Balanced'; runners who want Brooks' 'Plush' tier with GuideRails need the Glycerin GTS 23

  • Dual-density DNA Tuned midsole aimed at comfort on easy and long miles
  • A lower 37 mm heel than the max-stack giants, so less of an adjustment for C25K graduates

What it doesn't

  • At 10.7 oz (men's) it weighs about as much as the taller Bondi 9
  • Less foam underfoot than dedicated max shoes like the Glycerin Max 2 or Bondi 9

What it gets right

  • RTINGS measured a moderate 34.3 mm heel / 26.2 mm forefoot, for runners who don't want a tall platform
  • RTINGS describes it as stable without relying on corrective features, with easygoing appeal for newer runners
  • DNA Flash v2 in the forefoot and DNA Flash in the heel

What it doesn't

  • RTINGS notes this version added stack and weight over the last one
  • Moderate stack means less cushion than the super trainers here for 18-20 mile marathon long runs
  • RTINGS sees it working for 5K or 10K racing but not as a marathon race shoe

  • An 8 mm drop, lower than the Adrenaline GTS 25's 10 mm

What it doesn't

Common mistakes

  • Buying a Glycerin when you wanted a Ghost. The Glycerin is softer, heavier and more expensive. If you liked the Ghost, the Ghost is the answer.
  • Assuming GTS means "better". It means support. If you do not overpronate, it is weight you do not need.
  • Buying the Glycerin Max 2 in a men's wide. It is not made — narrow and standard only.
  • Trusting listed drops. RunRepeat measured 9.0 mm on the Ghost Max 4 against Brooks' listed 6 mm, and 8.1 mm on the Glycerin Max 2 against a listed 6 mm. See heel drop and stack height explained.
  • Replacing a Brooks by the calendar. The AAOS puts a shoe's useful life at about 500 miles — see when to replace running shoes.

How we chose these

Researched, compared, scored for your level

We start from what a published training plan actually asks of a runner at your level, compare every model's published specs (stack height, drop, weight, plate, stability features, widths) against that job, and score each pick on a public rubric. Each spec links to where it came from, so you can shortlist in minutes and buy with the numbers in front of you.

Scores are our editorial judgments from that documented research, and rankings are earned on the rubric alone — placement is never for sale. The rubric and weights are on the How We Pick page.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best Brooks running shoe?
The Brooks Ghost 18 for most runners: a 36.6 mm heel, DNA LOFT v3 foam and four widths from Narrow to Extra Wide, which covers Couch to 5K through marathon training. The Adrenaline GTS 25 is the pick if you need support, and the Glycerin 23 if you want a plusher ride.
What does GTS mean on a Brooks shoe?
It marks a model with GuideRails support. Brooks describes GuideRails as raised foam at the sides of the heel that limits excess movement rather than a medial post that corrects the foot continuously. Adrenaline GTS, Glycerin GTS, Beast GTS and Ariel GTS are all support shoes.
What is the difference between the Brooks Ghost and the Glycerin?
The Glycerin is Brooks' plush tier: softer dual-density DNA Tuned foam and a 37.2 mm lab-measured heel against the Ghost's 36.6 mm, at more weight and a higher price. The Ghost is the balanced default. Our Ghost vs Glycerin comparison goes through it properly.
Which Brooks running shoe has the most cushioning?
The Glycerin Max 2, with a 45.4 mm lab-measured heel and a GlideRoll rocker — Running Warehouse notes it is among the tallest stacks on the market. It is only sold in men's narrow and standard, so check the width before you commit.
Are Brooks good for wide feet?
They are one of the best brands for it. The Ghost 18 goes to Extra Wide, the Adrenaline GTS 25 to 4E, the Glycerin GTS 23 to 4E, and the Beast GTS 26 and Ariel GTS 26 are built with roomy, orthotic-friendly uppers.
