Best ASICS Running Shoes: What Each Name Actually Means

ASICS runs the widest road line-up of any brand, and the names tell you nothing. Gel means cushioned daily shoes, Blast means the fast super-foam family, and Metaspeed is race day. Nine shoes, each matched to a weekly mileage.

The best ASICS running shoe for most runners is the ASICS Novablast 6: 8.74 oz on RTINGS' scale with a 41.9 mm heel and a livelier FF TURBO-squared forefoot, which makes it the rare daily trainer that also handles a tempo day. If you want the traditional cushioned shoe with four widths, it is the Gel-Cumulus 28. If you need support, the Gel-Kayano 33. And if you race anything from a 10K upward, the Megablast is the most useful shoe in the whole range.

Decoding the ASICS range

  • Gel- prefix — the cushioned daily family. Gel-Cumulus is the standard, Gel-Nimbus is the plush one, Gel-Contend is the budget one.
  • Kayano and GT- — the support shoes. Kayano is premium, GT-2000 is lighter and cheaper.
  • -blast — the super-foam family. Novablast is the daily version, Megablast and Superblast are the tall plateless super trainers.
  • Magic Speed — the affordable carbon-plated workout and racing shoe.
  • Metaspeed — the flagship race shoes, split by gait: Sky for stride-style runners, Edge for cadence-style runners, Ray for minimum weight.

That is a genuinely complete line-up — wider than Brooks or HOKA — which is why "best ASICS running shoes" has no single answer until you say how far you run.

Which ASICS for your weekly mileage

  • Under 10 miles a week (Couch to 5K). Gel-Cumulus 28, or Gel-Contend 9 if the budget is tight. The NHS plan runs to 30-minute sessions, well within both. The Novablast 6 also works if you expect to keep going.
  • 10–20 miles a week (5K to 10K). Novablast 6, full stop. The 5-mile long run in Higdon's Novice 10K needs nothing more.
  • 20–30 miles a week (half marathon). Novablast 6 daily, Gel-Nimbus 28 for the long run Higdon takes to 10 miles, Magic Speed 5 for workouts.
  • 30–40 miles a week (marathon). Gel-Nimbus 28 or Superblast 3 for long runs, Novablast 6 daily, Megablast for tempo and race day. Our Novablast vs Superblast comparison sorts out the two that get confused.
  • You need support, at any mileage. GT-2000 15 first; Gel-Kayano 33 if you want more foam with it and the 4E width.

The range, side by side

The three neutral daily options. Every value links to the lab or maker that published it.
The two support shoes.
The fast end: two plateless super trainers and the carbon workout shoe.

The spread is remarkable: from the 31.2 mm lab-measured heel of the Gel-Contend 9 to the 46.5 mm of the Superblast 3, and from 7.1 oz to 10.4 oz. Note also that the two best-scoring shoes in the range — Novablast 6 and Megablast — are both from the Blast family and neither has a plate.

The ASICS drop problem

ASICS lists an 8 mm drop on a lot of shoes, and independent labs keep measuring something else. RTINGS measured 11.7 mm on the Gel-Cumulus 28; RunRepeat measured 5.2 mm on the Gel-Nimbus 28. That is a 6.5 mm spread between two shoes both sold as 8 mm, and drop is the spec that most changes how a shoe loads your calves and Achilles. If you are sensitive to drop, read the lab figure in the tables above rather than the box — our heel drop and stack height guide explains why the two disagree.

Race day: Metaspeed, and whether you need it

ASICS splits its flagship racer by gait rather than by distance, which no other brand does. The Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is built for stride-style runners who speed up by lengthening their stride; the Edge is for cadence-style runners who speed up by turning their legs over faster. ASICS lists the Sky Tokyo at 6 oz for a men's sample with a 39.5 mm heel, and RunRepeat measured 38.7 mm — under the 40 mm ceiling in the World Athletics rules, so it is legal for road racing.

Most runners should not start here. The Magic Speed 5 is the cheaper carbon shoe that handles workouts as well as races, and the Megablast covers tempo days and race day for anyone not chasing a time. See are carbon-plated shoes worth it before you spend flagship money.

Widths across the range

ASICS is one of the two brands to check first if you are hard to fit. The Gel-Cumulus 28 runs Narrow to Extra Wide; the Gel-Kayano 33 goes to 4E for men and 2A to D for women; the GT-2000 15 covers women's narrow through extra wide; and the Gel-Contend 9 offers men's X-Wide at $70. The fast shoes are the exception: the Superblast 3 and Magic Speed 5 are Normal width only.

9

What it gets right

  • Lab-measured 41.9 mm heel and 33.1 mm forefoot at just 8.74 oz (men's US 9): a high stack for its weight
  • FF TURBO² forefoot layer inside FF BLAST MAX is aimed at a more energetic toe-off for faster days
  • Regular and Wide sizing for both men and women
  • No plate and an 8 mm listed drop: a conventional setup that suits a first running shoe

What it doesn't

  • Neutral only: no plate, posts or other stability elements for runners who want guidance
  • A 33 mm lab-measured forefoot puts a lot of foam under the toes for runners who prefer a lower, closer-to-the-road shoe

Skip this if…

…you need a stability shoe with built-in support, or you want a low-stack shoe that sits closer to the road.

What it gets right

  • Four widths, Narrow to Extra Wide

  • BLAST MAX foam plus PureGEL; Running Warehouse calls it a go-to daily trainer for standard mileage runs

What it doesn't

  • RTINGS measured an 11.7 mm drop against the 8 mm ASICS lists: in practice a high-drop shoe
  • Neutral only: no stability elements for runners who want guidance

Skip this if…

…you want a low-drop shoe, or a livelier trainer that also handles tempo runs (look at the Novablast 6).

Best ASICS support shoe

ASICS Gel-Kayano 33

Mileage protection (25%)
8.9
Stability & fit range (15%)
9.6
Pace responsiveness (15%)
5.3
Rotation versatility (15%)
6.6

What it gets right

  • Two foams: a soft, durable FF BLAST MAX top layer over an FF BLAST PLUS bottom layer added for bounce, per Running Warehouse
  • Men's D, 2E and 4E, plus women's narrow (2A) through wide (D)
  • A 41 mm heel / 33 mm forefoot stack (men's 9) gives long easy runs plenty of cushion
  • The FluidSupport system is described by Running Warehouse as gently guiding the footstrike

What it doesn't

  • 10.4 oz (men's 9) is heavy for quicker running
  • No women's extra wide (2E) listed at Running Warehouse
  • More cushion and structure than a couch-to-5K runner strictly needs

Skip this if…

ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28

ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28

9
Mileage protection (25%)
8.8
Stability & fit range (15%)
8
Pace responsiveness (15%)
5
Rotation versatility (15%)
6.5

What it gets right

  • One of the broadest width ranges here: men's to extra wide, women's from narrow to wide
  • FF Blast+ midsole with a PureGEL heel insert, ASICS' comfort-focused combination
  • 39.5 mm lab-measured heel gives max-stack cushioning without a 45 mm+ platform
  • Running Warehouse pitches it as a reliable shoe for easy and long runs

What it doesn't

  • Tuned for comfort rather than speed, so it is not a tempo or race-day shoe
  • RunRepeat measured the drop at 5.2 mm against the listed 8 mm, so the geometry is flatter than the spec sheet suggests

Skip this if…

…you want one shoe that also handles tempo runs and intervals; its FF Blast+ midsole is built for comfort, not speed.

ASICS Megablast

Best ASICS super trainer

ASICS Megablast

8.5
Stability & fit range (15%)
7.5
Pace responsiveness (15%)

8.5

What it gets right

  • No plate by design, which makes it one of the clearest answers for runners who want a fast race-day shoe without carbon
  • 8.1 oz (men's US 9) is very light for a 45 mm heel / 37 mm forefoot stack
  • Believe in the Run lists its best use as 'pretty much everything'
  • RunRepeat lists a wide option as well as normal width

What it doesn't

  • Believe in the Run's reviewers called it a little blocky
  • A 45 mm stack gives far less ground contact than lower tempo shoes like the Kinvara 16 or Boston 13
  • Listed as a unisex shoe, so check the size chart before ordering a women's size

ASICS GT-2000 15

Best lighter ASICS support shoe

Mileage protection (25%)
8.3
Stability & fit range (15%)
9.5
Pace responsiveness (15%)
6.4
Rotation versatility (15%)
7.6

What it gets right

  • 9.1 oz for a men's 9 is among the lightest support shoes in this group
  • The 3D Guidance System uses platform geometry for what Running Warehouse describes as unobtrusive, adaptive stability
  • Men's D, 2E and 4E, and RunRepeat lists women's sizes from narrow to extra wide
  • A taller stack than the GT-2000 14 (40 mm heel / 32 mm forefoot) with a softer FF BLAST MAX compound

What it doesn't

  • Guidance is designed to be unobtrusive; runners who want maximum structure should look at the Beast or Ariel GTS 26
  • An 8 mm drop and a 40 mm heel make it a trainer, not a race-day shoe

Skip this if…

…you want ASICS' dual-foam, taller-stack option; that's the Gel-Kayano 33, with FF BLAST MAX over FF BLAST PLUS and a 41 mm heel

ASICS Superblast 3

Tallest ASICS, for long runs with pace

ASICS Superblast 3

8.8
Mileage protection (25%)
9
Stability & fit range (15%)
6.5
Pace responsiveness (15%)
8
Rotation versatility (15%)
8.5

What it gets right

  • The tallest stack in this list at 46.5 mm heel / 38.5 mm forefoot, aimed at many long-run miles
  • Non-plated, so it suits runners who want a fast trainer without carbon
  • 8.4 oz (men's size 9) is light for that much foam
  • New FF Leap top layer over an FF Blast Plus bottom layer

What it doesn't

  • Normal is the only width RunRepeat lists
  • RunRepeat notes it offers virtually no ground feedback, so it is a poor match for runners who like a close-to-the-road ride
  • Doctors of Running still describes it as stiff despite having no plate

Skip this if…

…you are in Couch to 5K or early 10K training; a 46.5 mm super trainer is far more shoe than three short runs a week need

ASICS Magic Speed 5

Best ASICS workout shoe

ASICS Magic Speed 5

7

What it gets right

  • 7.1 oz for a men's size 9, the lightest shoe in this list
  • Forked carbon plate, which RunRepeat says avoids the classic super-stiff feel of a full-length carbon plate
  • FF Leap top layer, which Running Warehouse describes as ASICS' lightest foam
  • RunRepeat suggests it for beginners who want a first carbon-plated shoe that also works for intervals

What it doesn't

  • 36 mm heel / 29 mm forefoot is much less stack than the super trainers here for marathon long runs
  • RunRepeat judged that the FF Blast+ base keeps the ride short of truly top-tier
  • Normal is the only width RunRepeat lists, and it is sold in unisex sizing

ASICS Gel-Contend 9

Best budget ASICS

ASICS Gel-Contend 9

7.0 /10

A $70 list price with men's Normal, Wide and X-Wide. RunRepeat recommends it for beginners and neutral runners up to 15K, and its 31.2 mm lab-measured heel is honest about the limit.

What it gets right

  • Three men's widths to X-Wide, which almost nothing else at $70 offers
  • 9.7 oz (men's 9): lighter than the adidas Galaxy 7 and Questar 4
  • Fits true to size in RunRepeat's testing, so ordering online is lower-risk

What it doesn't

  • A 23.4 mm lab-measured forefoot: RunRepeat says the low forefoot cushioning rules it out for longer distances
  • Low measured energy return; this is a shoe for steady easy running, not pace
  • RunRepeat scored the toebox mesh 1/5 for durability

Common mistakes

  • Buying a Superblast or Megablast as a first shoe. A 45–46 mm stack is a lot of shoe for three short runs a week, and neither comes in extra widths.
  • Choosing between Novablast and Superblast on the name. They are different categories — see our head-to-head.
  • Trusting the listed 8 mm drop. Labs measure 5.2 mm to 11.7 mm across shoes ASICS lists at the same figure.
  • Buying a Metaspeed without knowing your gait style. Sky and Edge are shaped for different runners; getting that wrong wastes the whole point of the shoe.
  • Stretching the Gel-Contend 9 past its brief. RunRepeat recommends it up to 15K; past that the forefoot foam runs out. The AAOS 500-mile guideline assumes the shoe suits the distance in the first place.

How we chose these

Researched, compared, scored for your level

We start from what a published training plan actually asks of a runner at your level, compare every model's published specs (stack height, drop, weight, plate, stability features, widths) against that job, and score each pick on a public rubric. Each spec links to where it came from, so you can shortlist in minutes and buy with the numbers in front of you.

Scores are our editorial judgments from that documented research, and rankings are earned on the rubric alone — placement is never for sale. The rubric and weights are on the How We Pick page.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best ASICS running shoe?
The ASICS Novablast 6 for most runners: 8.74 oz with a 41.9 mm lab-measured heel, light enough for faster days and tall enough for long runs. The Gel-Cumulus 28 is the traditional cushioned alternative with four widths, and the Gel-Kayano 33 is the support pick.
What is the difference between ASICS Gel-Cumulus and Gel-Nimbus?
The Nimbus is the plush tier. RunRepeat measured its heel at 39.5 mm with FF Blast+ foam over a PureGEL insert, against the Cumulus's 41.4 mm heel of firmer BLAST MAX. Confusingly, the Cumulus measures taller but the Nimbus feels softer, and their measured drops differ sharply — 11.7 mm versus 5.2 mm.
Which ASICS shoe is best for beginners?
The Gel-Cumulus 28, because it comes in Narrow, Standard, Wide and Extra Wide and has a tall, forgiving heel. The Gel-Contend 9 at a $70 list price is the budget version, which RunRepeat recommends for beginners up to 15K. Our beginner roundup covers the category.
What does Metaspeed Sky vs Edge mean?
ASICS shapes them for different gaits: Sky for stride-style runners who speed up by lengthening their stride, Edge for cadence-style runners who speed up by taking faster steps. Both are carbon-plated half and marathon racers; RunRepeat measured the Sky Tokyo heel at 38.7 mm, inside the 40 mm World Athletics limit.
Are ASICS good for wide feet?
Yes, among the best. The Gel-Cumulus 28 goes to Extra Wide, the Gel-Kayano 33 to 4E in men's, the GT-2000 15 to extra wide in women's, and the budget Gel-Contend 9 offers men's X-Wide. The fast shoes — Superblast 3, Magic Speed 5 — are Normal width only.
