Best HOKA Running Shoes: Clifton, Bondi, Mach or Arahi

HOKA's reputation is max cushioning, but the range is wider than that: the Clifton is a mid-weight all-rounder, the Mach is genuinely light, the Arahi is a support shoe you barely notice, and the Bondi is the one that earned the reputation.

The best HOKA running shoe for most runners is the HOKA Clifton 11: a 41.9 mm lab-measured heel at just 9.21 oz per RTINGS, with a MetaRocker and three widths. It gives you HOKA's cushioning without HOKA's weight. If you want the maximum-foam shoe the brand is famous for, that is the Bondi 9. If you want something light, the Mach 7 at 7.49 oz is lighter than most tempo shoes.

Decoding the HOKA range

  • Clifton — the mid-weight cushioned all-rounder. The volume seller, and rightly.
  • Bondi — maximum foam, maximum protection, heaviest. Recovery days and slow miles.
  • Mach — the light, lower, quicker daily. Mach X adds a plate and a lot more stack for tempo work.
  • Arahi — the support shoe, using an H-Frame rather than a medial post.
  • Skyward X — carbon-plated max cushion: the tallest, most propulsive training shoe HOKA makes.
  • Speedgoat — the technical trail shoe, and the benchmark in its category.

The MetaRocker, and whether you will like it

Almost every HOKA uses a rockered sole: the midsole curves up at the toe so the shoe rolls you forward rather than asking your foot to bend. Two consequences worth knowing before you buy:

  • It suits walk breaks and tired legs. That is why the Clifton 11 is such a good Couch-to-5K shoe, and why rockered shoes come up so often on our knee pain page.
  • Some runners feel unstable on it. A tall, soft, curved platform can feel tippy, particularly on cambered roads. If that is you, a flatter shoe is the answer, and Cleveland Clinic's advice to pick on comfort applies: do not persist with a geometry you dislike.

Which HOKA for your weekly mileage

  • Under 10 miles a week (Couch to 5K). Clifton 11, or Bondi 9 if you are heavier or doing a lot of walking. The NHS plan is run/walk for its first weeks, which rockered shoes handle well.
  • 10–20 miles a week (5K to 10K). Clifton 11, or Mach 7 if you want one lighter pair for everything in Higdon's Novice 10K.
  • 20–30 miles a week (half marathon). Clifton 11 daily, Bondi 9 or Skyward X 2 for the 10-mile long run in Novice 1 Half, Mach X 3 for tempo.
  • 30–40 miles a week (marathon). Skyward X 2 or Bondi 9 for long runs, Clifton 11 daily, Mach X 3 for uptempo. The 20-mile long run in Novice 1 Marathon is where a 45 mm stack earns its keep.
  • You need support. Arahi 8, which is lighter than most neutral trainers.
  • You run off road. Speedgoat 7 — see best trail running shoes.

The range, side by side

The three road dailies: mid-weight, max and light. Every value links to its published source.
The support shoe and the two plated shoes.

Nearly 9 mm of heel stack separates the Mach 7 from the Skyward X 2, and 2.6 oz separates the Mach 7 from the Bondi 9. If you have only ever tried one HOKA and written off the brand, it is worth knowing how different these are from each other.

HOKA's listed drops are consistently low

Independent labs keep measuring HOKA drops higher than HOKA lists them. RTINGS measured 10.2 mm on the Clifton 11 against a listed 8 mm and 7.9 mm on the Mach 7 against a listed 5 mm; RunRepeat measured 9.1 mm on the Bondi 9 against a listed 5 mm, 7.6 mm on the Skyward X 2 against a listed 5 mm, and 7.4 mm on the Speedgoat 7 against the 4 mm HOKA advertises. If you came to HOKA looking for a low-drop shoe, read the measured figures in the tables above — the pattern is unusually consistent, and our heel drop guide explains why it happens.

Widths, and the one thing to check

HOKA's width coverage is better than its reputation suggests. RunRepeat lists the Bondi 9 in Narrow, standard, wide and extra wide; the Clifton 11 in Regular, Wide and Extra-Wide; the Arahi 8 in men's normal to extra wide and women's narrow to extra wide; and the Speedgoat 7 in Narrow, Normal and Wide. The Skyward X 2 is the tightest: men's standard and wide, women's narrow and standard.

What it gets right

  • MetaRocker geometry that Running Warehouse says rolls through your stride
  • Regular, Wide and Extra-Wide sizing for both men and women

What it doesn't

  • RTINGS measured a 10.2 mm drop against the 8 mm HOKA lists
  • HOKA does not name the midsole foam; RTINGS lists it only as EVA

What it gets right

  • 9.3 oz (men's 9) is light for a support shoe with a 41 mm heel
  • H-Frame support without a traditional post; Running Warehouse describes it as subtle, guidance-based support
  • RunRepeat lists extra wide for both men and women, plus a women's narrow
  • Running Warehouse notes it is built for runners and walkers, which suits run/walk plans

What it doesn't

  • Support is intentionally subtle; runners wanting maximum structure should look at the Beast or Ariel GTS 26
  • A successor, the Arahi 9, has already been reviewed, so Arahi 8 sizes and colors may thin out over time

  • Plate-free, so it can double as a tempo shoe without committing to a plated super trainer

What it doesn't

  • RunRepeat's spec table lists jogging, walking and all-day wear among its uses, a fit for run/walk plans

What it doesn't

  • One of the heavier shoes here at 10.8 oz (men's 9)
  • HOKA lists a 5 mm drop but RunRepeat measured 9.1 mm, so the geometry depends on whose number you trust
  • Amazon listings come from third-party sellers, not HOKA

What it gets right

  • Pebax plate between a PEBA top layer and an EVA bottom layer, a plated shoe without carbon
  • 44 mm heel / 39 mm forefoot stack for long-run cushioning
  • Believe in the Run lists it as best for tempo miles and rates the new upper much better than the last version's
  • RunRepeat lists a wide as well as normal width

What it doesn't

  • 9.4 oz (men's US 10.5) puts it among the heavier tempo shoes here
  • Believe in the Run notes the midsole is unchanged from the previous version while the rest of the category has moved on
  • A 44 mm / 39 mm stack gives little ground contact for short, sharp track intervals

What it gets right

  • 4.5 mm lugs on Vibram Megagrip: RunRepeat's deep-lug band, for mud, loose dirt and wet rock
  • The most durable outsole in this group, with only 0.6 mm removed in RunRepeat's Dremel test
  • Supercritical EVA midsole this generation, so the cushioning is closer to a modern road trainer
  • Sold in Narrow, Normal and Wide on HOKA's own store

What it doesn't

  • The most expensive shoe here at a $165 list price
  • RunRepeat measured 7.4 mm of drop against HOKA's advertised 4 mm, so it is not the low-drop shoe the box claims
  • RunRepeat notes a tapered toebox that limits toe splay, and less agility than the previous version
  • HOKA has no first-party Amazon store, so listings come from third-party sellers

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every HOKA is a Bondi. The Mach 7 is 7.49 oz, lighter than plenty of tempo shoes from other brands.
  • Buying HOKA for a low drop. Listed 4–5 mm drops measure 7–10 mm in independent labs across the range.
  • Using the Skyward X 2 for intervals. A 45.8 mm plated platform is a long-run tool. The Mach X 3 is the tempo shoe.
  • Persisting with a rocker you dislike. If the shoe feels tippy, that will not improve. Try a flatter brand — our HOKA vs Brooks comparison is the usual next stop.
  • Running a Speedgoat on the road. 4.5 mm lugs wear fast on pavement and feel knobbly — see running shoes vs trail running shoes.
  • Keeping a dead pair for easy days. The AAOS puts a shoe's useful life at about 500 miles, and HOKA's soft foams flatten like anyone else's.

How we chose these

Researched, compared, scored for your level

We start from what a published training plan actually asks of a runner at your level, compare every model's published specs (stack height, drop, weight, plate, stability features, widths) against that job, and score each pick on a public rubric. Each spec links to where it came from, so you can shortlist in minutes and buy with the numbers in front of you.

Scores are our editorial judgments from that documented research, and rankings are earned on the rubric alone — placement is never for sale. The rubric and weights are on the How We Pick page.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best HOKA running shoe?
The HOKA Clifton 11: a 41.9 mm lab-measured heel at 9.21 oz with a MetaRocker, in Regular, Wide and Extra-Wide. It gives you HOKA's cushioning at a sensible weight. The Bondi 9 is the maximum-foam option and the Mach 7 at 7.49 oz is the light one.
What is the difference between the HOKA Clifton and the Bondi?
The Bondi 9 is the max-cushion shoe: RunRepeat measured its heel at 41.3 mm and HOKA lists it at 10.8 oz for a men's 9, against the Clifton 11's 41.9 mm measured heel at 9.21 oz. They measure similarly tall; the Bondi is heavier, broader and firmer-riding, built for recovery days and heavier runners.
Are HOKA shoes good for beginners?
The Clifton 11 is one of the best first shoes there is, because the MetaRocker suits the run/walk pattern that the NHS Couch to 5K plan uses, and it comes in three widths. The caveat is that some runners find tall rockered shoes unstable; if that is you, a flatter trainer is better.
Do HOKA shoes really have a low heel drop?
Lower than most brands as listed, but not as low as listed. Independent labs measured 10.2 mm on the Clifton 11 (listed 8 mm), 9.1 mm on the Bondi 9 (listed 5 mm), 7.9 mm on the Mach 7 (listed 5 mm) and 7.4 mm on the Speedgoat 7 (advertised 4 mm).
Can you buy HOKA on Amazon?
Yes, but through third-party sellers rather than a HOKA first-party store, which is why every HOKA card on this site carries that note. Check the seller, the returns policy, the model version and your width before committing.
