Best Running Shoes for Narrow Feet: Every Pick Has a Published Narrow Width

Wide feet get all the attention. If yours are narrow, the problem is heel slip and a sloppy midfoot, and the answer is a shoe that actually comes in a B or a 2A. These ten do, and every width below links to the source that lists it.

Why narrow feet are the harder fitting problem

Every brand now runs a wide and an extra wide, because wide feet are a visible complaint. Narrow widths get cut first: of the shoes on this site, only ten carry a published narrow option, and three of those are women's only. If your foot is narrow, you are not choosing between fifty shoes with a tweak — you are choosing between these.

What goes wrong in a shoe that is too wide

A too-wide shoe does not feel too wide. It feels like three other problems:

  • Heel slip. Your heel lifts out of the heel counter with each stride. Running Warehouse lists heel slip as the classic sign of a shoe that is too big — but a shoe that is the right length and too wide does exactly the same thing.
  • Blisters on the inside of the arch and the back of the heel. The foot slides sideways and lengthwise inside a shoe it does not fill.
  • Overtightened laces. The instinct is to crank the laces down, which pinches the top of the foot and can irritate the extensor tendons. The ASICS fit guide is clear that lacing should hold the foot, not compress it.

A support shoe that is too wide is worse again: the guidance features sit under the wrong part of your foot and do nothing. If you overpronate and have narrow feet, a narrow width is not a comfort preference, it is the whole point of buying the shoe.

Every pick's published narrow width

Men's narrow is B; women's narrow is 2A. Some brands simply print "Narrow". Here is what each source actually lists.

The top picks, side by side

The overall pick, the plain neutral option and the support option. Every value links to its source.
The three cushioned options, for long runs and recovery days.

One pattern to notice: New Balance accounts for three of the ten, because it publishes a full letter-grade width run on more models than anyone else. If you have narrow feet and you have never got on with a brand, that is usually why.

The lacing fix for heel slip

Even in the right width, a narrow heel can slide. Before you return anything, try a heel lock (also called a runner's loop), which uses the extra top eyelet most running shoes have:

  1. Lace normally up to the second-from-top eyelet.
  2. Instead of crossing over, take each lace straight up into the top eyelet on the same side, making a loop.
  3. Thread each lace end through the opposite loop, then pull both ends down and out.
  4. Tie as normal. The loops pull the ankle collar in behind your heel without tightening the laces across the top of your foot — which is the compression the ASICS fit guide warns against.

If that does not solve it, the shoe is too long, not too wide. The AAOS asks for about half an inch beyond the longest toe and a heel counter that grips; our running shoe sizing guide walks through measuring at home.

Which one for your distance

  • Couch to 5K. 880 v15 or Ghost 18. Both are plain, steady and available narrow.
  • 5K to 10K. 880 v15 or Gel-Cumulus 28.
  • Half marathon. 1080 v15 for the long run, 880 v15 for everything else.
  • Marathon. 1080 v15 or Gel-Kayano 33 for long runs, Bondi 9 or More v6 on recovery days. See best marathon training shoes.
  • You also overpronate. Adrenaline GTS 25 first; Arahi 8 if you want less structure; Gel-Kayano 33 if you want more foam with it.

  • RunRepeat measured a 4.3 mm drop against the 6 mm listed, lower than most shoes here

What it gets right

  • Four widths (Narrow, Medium, Wide, Extra Wide): one of the broadest fit ranges in this group
  • A 10 mm listed drop keeps a traditional heel-to-toe geometry, familiar to runners coming from everyday sneakers
  • Running Warehouse pitches it for daily mileage, long steady efforts, recovery runs and walks
  • No plate: a conventional build with nothing unusual to adapt to

What it doesn't

  • 9.99 oz lab-measured (men's US 9): heavier than the Novablast 6 or Mach 7
  • A 25.8 mm lab-measured forefoot is thinner than max-cushion shoes for 18-20 mile long runs

What it gets right

  • Brooks pitches it both as a daily driver in a training rotation and as a safe go-to for runners just starting out, and lists walking as a use
  • Four widths in each gender, from Narrow to Extra Wide (4E men's, 2E women's)
  • GuideRails support system, which Brooks says helps keep excess movement in check, paired with more nitrogen-infused cushioning in the heel and forefoot than before
  • RunRepeat's lab measured a 36.1 mm heel and 25.9 mm forefoot: solid cushion without a towering stack

What it doesn't

  • 10.6 oz for the men's shoe is heavy for faster running
  • A 10 mm drop is on the high side if you prefer a flatter, lower-drop shoe
  • Brooks rates the cushion 'Balanced'; runners who want Brooks' 'Plush' tier with GuideRails need the Glycerin GTS 23

What not to do

  • Do not size down to fix width. A shorter shoe does not get narrower; it just bruises your toenails. Length and width are separate adjustments.
  • Do not fix heel slip with thicker socks. It works for one run and then the sock bunches. Fix the width or the lacing.
  • Do not buy a standard-width support shoe because the narrow was out of stock. The guidance features only work where your foot sits on them.
  • Do not assume a kids' or women's shoe solves it. Different size runs reach smaller sizes, not necessarily narrower lasts.
  • Do not ignore comfort for a spec. Cleveland Clinic puts comfort first for a reason — a narrow shoe that hurts is still a shoe that hurts.

How we chose these

Researched, compared, scored for your level

We start from what a published training plan actually asks of a runner at your level, compare every model's published specs (stack height, drop, weight, plate, stability features, widths) against that job, and score each pick on a public rubric. Each spec links to where it came from, so you can shortlist in minutes and buy with the numbers in front of you.

Scores are our editorial judgments from that documented research, and rankings are earned on the rubric alone — placement is never for sale. The rubric and weights are on the How We Pick page.

Questions

Frequently asked

What are the best running shoes for narrow feet?
The New Balance Fresh Foam X 880 v15, which Running Warehouse lists in a men's B and a women's 2A on a firm 39.7 mm platform. The Brooks Ghost 18 is the plainest alternative in Narrow, and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 is the one to buy if you need support, in men's 1B or women's 2A.
What width is narrow in running shoes?
B for men and 2A for women. A men's D and a women's B are the standard mediums, so a men's B is one step narrower than standard and a women's 2A is one step narrower than a women's B. Some brands print "Narrow" instead of the letter code.
How do I stop my heel slipping in running shoes?
Use a heel lock through the extra top eyelet: loop each lace straight up into the top eyelet on the same side, thread each end through the opposite loop, then pull down. It pulls the collar in behind your heel without compressing the top of your foot. If slip survives that, the shoe is too long.
Can I just buy a smaller size if my feet are narrow?
No. Sizing down shortens the shoe without narrowing the last, and you lose the toe room the AAOS asks for — about half an inch beyond your longest toe. Buy the right length in a narrow width instead.
Which brand makes the most narrow running shoes?
New Balance, on this evidence: it publishes a full letter-grade width run (men's B to 4E, women's 2A to 2E) on more models than any other brand here, which is why three of these ten picks are New Balance.
