Best Running Shoes for Women, Picked by How Far You Run

Nine women's running shoes sorted by the job each one does in a training week rather than by brand: the steady first pair, the long-run cruiser, the support shoe, the narrow and wide options, and the one tempo shoe worth owning.

If you want one answer, it is the Saucony Ride 19: a balanced neutral trainer with a 37.6 mm lab-measured heel, 9.09 oz on RTINGS' scale and a women's Wide, which covers everything from a first run/walk week to a half marathon. If your weekly mileage is already climbing, the ASICS Novablast 6 is the more versatile shoe. If your arches roll inward, skip straight to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25, the only shoe on this page listed in four women's widths.

Who this list is for

This site picks shoes by pace and weekly mileage rather than by gender, so this page is not a separate, softer list. It is the same shoes, filtered to the ones with a published women's size run we can point at, and ordered by the job each one does in a training week. A woman running three 30-minute sessions on the NHS Couch to 5K plan and a woman in week 14 of Hal Higdon's Novice 1 Marathon need different shoes, and that difference matters far more than the color on the box.

What is actually different about a women's shoe

Less than the marketing suggests, and more than nothing. Three things are real and worth acting on:

  • The width codes are different. A women's D is a wide; a men's D is a medium. Women's narrow is 2A, medium is B, wide is D and extra wide is 2E — which is exactly how Running Warehouse lists the 1080 v15. Reading a men's width chart and ordering the same letter is the most common sizing mistake there is.
  • The size run reaches narrower. Several shoes here offer a women's Narrow that the men's version does not: the Gel-Nimbus 28 lists women's narrow, standard and wide against men's standard, wide and extra wide.
  • Listed weights are lower, because the sample size is smaller. ASICS lists the Gel-Nimbus 28 at 8.5 oz in a women's sample and 10 oz in a men's. That is the same shoe, weighed at a different size.

What is not a reason to choose a shoe: the claim that women need extra cushioning or extra support as a category. The 2022 Cochrane review found the evidence for prescribing shoe types to prevent injury is weak across the board. Fit, then the job the shoe does, then everything else — the order Cleveland Clinic and the AAOS both describe.

Which shoe for your distance

  • Starting out, 0–10 miles a week. Ride 19, Ghost 18 or Clifton 11. The NHS plan asks for three sessions a week with walk breaks, and the Clifton's MetaRocker suits that rhythm. See best running shoes for beginner women for the full beginner list.
  • Training for a 10K, 10–20 miles a week. Ride 19 or Novablast 6. Higdon's Novice 10K tops out at a 5-mile long run, which one versatile pair covers comfortably.
  • Half marathon, 20–30 miles a week. Novablast 6 or 1080 v15 for the long run, which Higdon takes to 10 miles. Add the Endorphin Speed 5 if your plan has a weekly tempo session.
  • Marathon, 30–40 miles a week. Two pairs, not one: the 1080 v15 or Gel-Nimbus 28 for long runs, the Novablast 6 or Ride 19 for everything else. See best marathon shoes for women.
  • You overpronate, or your knees ache on easy runs. Adrenaline GTS 25 first, GT-2000 15 if that feels like too much structure.

Every pick's published women's widths

This is the table to read if you have ever bought running shoes online and sent them back. Every entry is the width range as the maker or the reviewer publishes it — not our estimate.

The top picks, side by side

The overall pick, the versatile pick and the support pick. Every value links to the review or product page that published it.
The three long-run and easy-day options, which is where most weekly mileage actually lives.

Note how little separates them on paper: roughly 1.3 oz across the daily trainers, and about 4 mm of heel stack between the Ride 19 and the Novablast 6. The number that changes how a shoe feels most is the measured drop, and on the Gel-Nimbus 28 RunRepeat measured 5.2 mm against ASICS' listed 8 mm. Read the lab figure, not the box.

How many pairs you actually need

One, until you are running more than about 20 miles a week. After that, two pairs beat one expensive pair: the AAOS puts a running shoe's useful life at roughly 500 miles, and rotating spreads that load while giving you a shoe for easy days and a shoe for faster ones. Our running shoe rotation guide sets out which pairs to buy in which order; when to replace running shoes covers the wear signs.

What it gets right

  • Reformulated PWRRUN+ midsole, pitched by Saucony for easy miles, long steady runs and faster training
  • Wide versions for both men and women
  • 9.09 oz lab-measured (men's US 9): mid-pack weight for a full-cushion trainer
  • Mid-height 37.6 mm heel sits between lean trainers and max-cushion shoes

What it doesn't

  • RTINGS measured a 9.8 mm drop against the 8 mm Saucony lists
  • No stability elements for runners who want guidance

…you want maximum cushion for 18-20 mile long runs, or you need a dedicated stability shoe.

What it gets right

  • Lab-measured 41.9 mm heel and 33.1 mm forefoot at just 8.74 oz (men's US 9): a high stack for its weight
  • FF TURBO² forefoot layer inside FF BLAST MAX is aimed at a more energetic toe-off for faster days
  • Regular and Wide sizing for both men and women
  • No plate and an 8 mm listed drop: a conventional setup that suits a first running shoe

What it doesn't

  • Neutral only: no plate, posts or other stability elements for runners who want guidance
  • A 33 mm lab-measured forefoot puts a lot of foam under the toes for runners who prefer a lower, closer-to-the-road shoe

What it gets right

  • Brooks pitches it both as a daily driver in a training rotation and as a safe go-to for runners just starting out, and lists walking as a use
  • Four widths in each gender, from Narrow to Extra Wide (4E men's, 2E women's)
  • GuideRails support system, which Brooks says helps keep excess movement in check, paired with more nitrogen-infused cushioning in the heel and forefoot than before
  • RunRepeat's lab measured a 36.1 mm heel and 25.9 mm forefoot: solid cushion without a towering stack

What it doesn't

  • 10.6 oz for the men's shoe is heavy for faster running
  • A 10 mm drop is on the high side if you prefer a flatter, lower-drop shoe
  • Brooks rates the cushion 'Balanced'; runners who want Brooks' 'Plush' tier with GuideRails need the Glycerin GTS 23

  • 9.1 oz (men's size 9) for a 37 mm lab-measured heel
  • A 6 mm drop for runners who prefer a flatter geometry than the Ghost or Pegasus

What it doesn't

  • RunRepeat's review does not recommend it for runners with stability needs
  • The 6 mm drop is a change for runners used to 10-12 mm trainers

  • FF Blast+ midsole with a PureGEL heel insert, ASICS' comfort-focused combination
  • 39.5 mm lab-measured heel gives max-stack cushioning without a 45 mm+ platform
  • Running Warehouse pitches it as a reliable shoe for easy and long runs

What it doesn't

  • Tuned for comfort rather than speed, so it is not a tempo or race-day shoe
  • RunRepeat measured the drop at 5.2 mm against the listed 8 mm, so the geometry is flatter than the spec sheet suggests

What it gets right

  • Four widths (Narrow, Medium, Wide, Extra Wide): one of the broadest fit ranges in this group
  • A 10 mm listed drop keeps a traditional heel-to-toe geometry, familiar to runners coming from everyday sneakers
  • Running Warehouse pitches it for daily mileage, long steady efforts, recovery runs and walks
  • No plate: a conventional build with nothing unusual to adapt to

What it doesn't

  • 9.99 oz lab-measured (men's US 9): heavier than the Novablast 6 or Mach 7
  • A 25.8 mm lab-measured forefoot is thinner than max-cushion shoes for 18-20 mile long runs

What it gets right

  • 9.1 oz for a men's 9 is among the lightest support shoes in this group
  • The 3D Guidance System uses platform geometry for what Running Warehouse describes as unobtrusive, adaptive stability
  • Men's D, 2E and 4E, and RunRepeat lists women's sizes from narrow to extra wide
  • A taller stack than the GT-2000 14 (40 mm heel / 32 mm forefoot) with a softer FF BLAST MAX compound

What it doesn't

  • Guidance is designed to be unobtrusive; runners who want maximum structure should look at the Beast or Ariel GTS 26
  • An 8 mm drop and a 40 mm heel make it a trainer, not a race-day shoe

  • Believe in the Run lists it as best for tempo days and track workouts
  • Normal and wide widths listed

What it doesn't

  • Believe in the Run's summary: good at everything, but missing a specialty

Five mistakes worth avoiding

  • Ordering a men's width letter in a women's shoe. D is wide in a women's size run and medium in a men's. Check the chart, every time.
  • Buying your street-shoe size. Running Warehouse and the AAOS both ask for roughly a thumb's width past your longest toe, which usually means half a size up. See what size running shoes to get.
  • Buying a support shoe because a shop assistant watched you walk. The Cochrane review found weak evidence for assigning shoe types by foot posture. Buy support because a neutral shoe feels unstable to you, not because of a two-second gait glance.
  • Using one pair for everything at 30+ miles a week. That is how a shoe dies in three months and takes a training block with it.
  • Buying a carbon-plated race shoe before you have a race. See are carbon-plated shoes worth it — the honest answer is "only for some runners, at some distances".

How we chose these

Researched, compared, scored for your level

We start from what a published training plan actually asks of a runner at your level, compare every model's published specs (stack height, drop, weight, plate, stability features, widths) against that job, and score each pick on a public rubric. Each spec links to where it came from, so you can shortlist in minutes and buy with the numbers in front of you.

Scores are our editorial judgments from that documented research, and rankings are earned on the rubric alone — placement is never for sale. The rubric and weights are on the How We Pick page.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best running shoe for women?
The Saucony Ride 19 for most women: a 37.6 mm lab-measured heel, 9.09 oz on RTINGS' scale and a women's Wide, which makes it work from a first 5K through a half marathon. The ASICS Novablast 6 is the better choice once your week includes a long run and a faster run, and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 is the pick if you want support.
Are women's running shoes actually different from men's?
The width codes are — women's narrow is 2A and women's wide is D, where a men's D is a medium — and several models offer a women's Narrow the men's run does not, including the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28. Listed weights differ because the sample size differs. Beyond fit, there is no evidence base for prescribing a different category of shoe by gender.
Which women's running shoes come in narrow widths?
On this page: the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 (2A), the New Balance 1080 v15 (2A), the Brooks Ghost 18 (Narrow), the ASICS GT-2000 15 (narrow) and the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28 (narrow). Our narrow-feet roundup goes deeper on that.
Do I need a women's-specific running shoe at all?
You need a shoe that fits your foot. For most women that means the women's size run, because it reaches smaller sizes and narrower widths. If you have a wide, high-volume foot, the men's version in the equivalent size can fit better — the shoe is not different, the last is.
How many pairs of running shoes should a woman own?
One until you pass roughly 20 miles a week, then two. The AAOS puts a shoe's life at about 500 miles, and two pairs split that load while giving you an easy-day shoe and a faster shoe.
