As the research section below explains, a stability shoe is best treated as a comfort and preference choice, not as treatment for anything. What the research says about pronation
Stability shoes are often marketed for overpronation: Mizuno says the Wave Inspire 22 is designed for runners with overpronation, and Altra describes the Torin ST's GuideRail as designed for overpronators. The research on pronation itself is less tidy. In a one-year study of 927 novice runners (1,854 feet), all starting in the same neutral shoe and tracking every run with GPS, Nielsen and colleagues (British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2014) found no significant difference in injury risk after 250 km between neutral feet and pronated or supinated feet. Pronated feet actually had fewer injuries per 1,000 km than neutral feet. The authors concluded that the results contradict the belief that moderate pronation raises injury risk for novices in a neutral shoe, and said more work is needed on highly pronated feet.
A review by Nigg and colleagues (British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2015) found the evidence linking pronation to running injuries inconclusive, and proposed a different way of choosing shoes: a "comfort filter", in which runners select the product that is comfortable for them.
What that means for you: you do not need a stability shoe just because you have been told you overpronate, and you are not doing anything wrong by choosing one because it is the shoe you find most comfortable. Any level can run in a stability shoe, because it fills the daily-trainer role. What changes with level is how much cushion it needs and whether it is your only shoe.

If you already like a brand's neutral shoe, its support model is the easiest comparison. Brooks' neutral Ghost 18 and the Adrenaline GTS 25 share a 10 mm listed drop and four-width sizing, so the main difference is GuideRails. ASICS' plush neutral trainer is the Gel-Nimbus 28; its flagship support shoe is the Gel-Kayano 33.

What to look for in a stability shoe
How much guidance you want. Start gentle (GT-2000 15, Guide 19, Arahi 8) unless you already know you prefer a more structured shoe. More structure is not automatically better.
Cushion for your longest run. The Adrenaline's lab-measured 36.1 mm heel is a moderate stack; the 41 mm Kayano 33, Arahi 8 and Hurricane 26 carry more foam into marathon long runs.
Drop. From 6 mm (Guide 19, Hurricane 26) to 10 mm (Adrenaline GTS 25, Wave Inspire 22). If you are coming from a high-drop shoe, the 8-10 mm options are the smaller change.

Common stability-shoe mistakes
Buying maximum structure by default. The research above does not support choosing a shoe on pronation alone. Start with the level of support you find comfortable.
Expecting a shoe to fix pain. No shoe treats an injury. If something hurts, see a clinician.
Ignoring the width. Several picks come in four widths. The wrong width is a fit problem, not a support problem.
Using a support trainer for speed work. These are daily trainers. If your plan adds tempo runs, add a lighter pair for those days rather than racing in a 9-11 oz support trainer.
