The best half marathon shoe without a carbon plate is the ASICS Megablast. It has no plate at all, yet RunRepeat says it performed as if it did, and it's built to cover daily runs, tempo sessions, long runs and race day. If you want something lighter and lower to the ground, the adidas Adizero Evo SL is the pick. If most of your plan is long runs and you want the most cushion, choose the ASICS Superblast 3. Do you need a carbon plate for a half marathon?
No. No half marathon training plan we've read requires one, and the shoe that gets you to the start line healthy and comfortable matters more than the plate inside it. The honest nuance is that the research on plates cuts both ways:
A plate on its own may not do much.Beck, Golyski and Sawicki (2020) added carbon fiber plates to shoe soles and tested 15 athletes at 3.5 m/s (about 7:40 per mile, our conversion). The stiffer soles did not change aerobic energy use, and the authors concluded that adding carbon plates may not improve running economy.
Foam plus plate did beat foam alone in one recent study.Wang et al. (2026) tested 30 recreational runners at 10.8 and 12.6 km/h (about 8:56 and 7:40 per mile, our conversion). A PEBA-foam, carbon-plated racer lowered oxygen uptake and heart rate compared with a PEBA-foam shoe without a plate and with a TPU-foam trainer.
Comfort decides what runners like. In Bolliger et al. (2026), comfort was a stronger driver of shoe preference than oxygen cost.
Put together: a carbon super shoe may give you a small measurable edge on race day, but it isn't the plate alone doing the work, and it isn't required. If a plateless shoe feels better to you over 10 miles, that's a sound reason to race in it. Our full take is in are carbon-plated shoes worth it.
Plateless vs nylon-plated: what "no carbon" can mean
Searches for shoes "without a carbon plate" cover three quite different kinds of shoe, and it helps to know which one you're after.
Plateless super trainers: the Megablast, Evo SL, Superblast 3 and Endorphin Azura. Modern race-type foams, no plate. These are the closest plateless equivalents to a super shoe.
Non-carbon plates: the Endorphin Speed 5 and Hyperion Max 4 both use nylon plates, and the HOKA Mach X 3 uses a Pebax plate. You get some of a plate's snap with more flex than carbon.
Traditional light trainers: the Saucony Kinvara 16 (and the Brooks Launch 12) keep things simple: a lower stack, no plate, older-style foam.
One shoe you might expect here isn't: the adidas Adizero Boston 13 uses carbon-based Energy Rods instead of a full plate, so it doesn't meet the "no carbon" brief. Here's how the four most likely half marathon picks compare on published specs:

Which plateless shoe for which half marathoner
You want one fast shoe for training and race day
Pick the Megablast or the Evo SL. RunRepeat recommends the Evo SL to beginners who want a do-it-all shoe for training and racing, and to runners who dislike carbon plates. The Megablast carries a lot more foam (45 mm heel against the Evo SL's 38 mm, per Believe in the Run) for about the same weight, so it's the one to choose if your long runs are what leave you sore.
Your plan is mostly long runs
The Superblast 3 and Hyperion Max 4 are built for them. Doctors of Running lists the Superblast 3 for long runs, easy runs, uptempo runs and workouts, with particular strength in uptempo efforts over long runs. You want some plate feel without the stiffness
That's the Endorphin Speed 5. RunRepeat describes its nylon plate as adding stability and snap while keeping a high level of flexibility, unlike what carbon plates typically offer, and rates it for daily running, tempo and racing.
You want stability in a fast shoe
Be careful here. RunRepeat says the Evo SL isn't suitable for runners who need stability support, while it rated the Megablast highly for stability. On the Superblast 3 the reviewers disagree: RunRepeat credits it with strong stability, but Doctors of Running calls it a neutral shoe whose geometry will not work for a lot of runners and says it poorly suits runners who need stability. If you normally wear a stability shoe, try before you buy.
You have wide feet
The Megablast, Evo SL and Endorphin Speed 5 all list a wide width alongside normal. RunRepeat lists the Superblast 3 and Hyperion Max 4 in normal width only, and we found no confirmed wide Endorphin Azura.
Where each pick fits in a half marathon week
In Novice 1, the week is simple: runs on Tuesday and Thursday that grow from 3 to 5 miles, an optional short run or cross-training on Wednesday, cross-training on Saturday and the long run on Sunday. Hal Higdon asks for all of it at a comfortable, conversational pace. Novice 2, for runners who've done this before, adds midweek runs at goal race pace and a 12-mile long run in week 11. That's where a fast plateless shoe starts earning its place, and it's why the picks below split by day rather than by score.

Racing 13.1 without a plate
Treat a plateless race shoe exactly like a carbon one: prove it before race day. Novice 1 suggests a 5K at the end of week 6 and a 10K at the end of week 9, which are ideal test runs at effort. By week 11 your Sunday long run is 10 miles, so you'll know whether the shoe is still comfortable deep into a run. One practical advantage of the plateless route is that you can do all of that without wearing out a race-only shoe, because these pairs are meant to be trained in. In race week itself, Novice 1 tapers to 6-9 miles of running before Sunday (our arithmetic from the week 12 schedule), so there's no reason to change anything that close to the start.

How to choose a half marathon shoe without a carbon plate
Name the job first. Race day only, long runs, or everything? The Megablast and Evo SL cover everything; the Superblast 3 and Hyperion Max 4 lean toward long runs; the Kinvara 16 leans toward short, faster sessions.
Choose your stack height on purpose. A 45 mm heel protects you on 10-mile long runs but gives little ground feel. RunRepeat notes the Superblast 3 offers virtually no ground feedback, while the Kinvara 16's 29 mm / 24 mm stack keeps you close to the road.
Check the weight against the role. The Evo SL is listed at 7.9 oz and the Megablast at 8.1 oz (men's US 9, Believe in the Run); the Hyperion Max 4 is 10.1 oz. Heavier is fine for long runs and less fine for a race.

Be honest about the trade. If you're chasing every possible second, the Wang et al. result above suggests a carbon super shoe can still lower your oxygen cost compared with a plateless shoe on the same foam. If comfort, steadiness or one-shoe simplicity matter more to you, plateless is the better buy.
Mistakes to avoid
Assuming no carbon means slow. RunRepeat's testing of the Megablast is the counterexample: no plate, super shoe performance.
Buying a max-stack shoe for short intervals. The Megablast's 45 mm stack puts far more foam between you and the road than a lower shoe; for 400s and strides, a lower shoe like the Kinvara 16 makes more sense. Our tempo shoe roundup sorts the options by workout.
Missing the rods. "Plate-free" isn't always carbon-free: the Boston 13's Energy Rods are carbon-based.
Expecting stiffness to vanish. No plate doesn't mean floppy. RunRepeat calls the Megablast notably stiff, and Doctors of Running describes the Superblast 3 as stiff despite having no plate.
Sizing and fit notes
The Megablast is listed as a unisex shoe, so check ASICS' size chart before ordering a women's size. Doctors of Running says runners with normal to slightly wider feet will appreciate the Superblast 3's improved fit over version 2. RunRepeat flags poor toebox durability on both the Megablast and the Evo SL because of their lightweight uppers, which is worth knowing if you tend to wear through the top of your shoes.
